So ive got a 50inch Cub Cadet zero turn with what appears to be a transmission problem. The right side works sometimes and sometimes doesnt.

It does appear there is a small leak from one of the seals on it which i plan to replace very soon but i keep the fluid full even with the leak. Location Tampa, FL. I have a 50 inch Troy-bilt with same issue. I drained and refilled with auto tranny fluid rather than motor oil.

Seems to have fixed most of the issue.

There were several people that posted replies that had taken the transmission apart and cleaned the filter and refilled with fluid.

Seems like the biggest problem each had was the bolts galling. Kroil and patience seemed like the best solution. Each reported good results after performing this maintenance. I have a Z-Force that is 3 years old and I haven't had to do any major repairs. I recently replaced the tension pulley on the blade drive belt after the sealed bearing failed.

You can't change the hydrostatic fluid even if you want to. Because the transmission system has changed over the years, it's important to consult the manual for your specific model for information on swapping out the hydro fluid. Some older models take LTX hydrostatic fluid, but the specs for newer models, such as the ZT1 42, call for 20W50 motor oil.

If the system develops a leak and the reservoir runs dry, air can get into the transmission system, and that produces the same effect as spongy brakes in an automobile. Basically, the mower or tractor operates sluggishly, and eventually, it won't move at all.

This is why it's essential to check the transmission fluid level periodically. If you can move the vehicle without engaging the Cub Cadet transmission bypass lever, that's one sign that air has gotten into the system and that you need to purge it. Cub Cadet zero-turn hydrostatic problems include air in the transmission pumps of vehicles that have been stored over the winter, so it's a good idea to purge the transmission fluid before the first use in the spring.

As a rule of thumb, a complete replacement of the hydro fluid in any tractor or mower model without a sealed system should occur after 1, service hours.

Changing the hydraulic fluid in a Cub Cadet tractor or mower is much like changing the engine oil in a car. It's a good idea to run the engine for 5 minutes to get the fluids circulating, then park on a level surface and turn off the engine. Using the manual as a guide, locate the drain plug for the transmission system. Place a bucket underneath to catch the fluid and unscrew the plug with a wrench.

Let all the fluid run out; then remove and clean the transmission sump screen, if your model has one. Replace the main hydraulic filter; then refill the reservoir with the appropriate hydraulic fluid.
