You have almost nothing to fear except fear itself. You CAN fix your own speedometer. Here is some information that may help you.Typical motorcycle speedometers are not complex pieces of equipment. They consist of a speedometer gauge and a speedometer cable that connects between the gauge and a fitting on the front wheel hub. Some motorcycles have electronic speedometers that require calibration and repair by a trained technician.

Problems with mechanical speedometers are most often a faulty gauge or worn cable. If the gauge is not damaged, a simple troubleshooting procedure will isolate the problem. Stabilize the motorcycle on the kickstand or a repair stand. Locate the lower end of the speedometer cable where it attaches at the front wheel hub. Use a small metric wrench to loosen the fitting that connects the cable to the hub. Pull the end of the cable out of the hub, and inspect the square end of the cable.

If it is broken or the edges are rounded, the cable needs to be replaced. If the end is broken, there is most likely a piece of the broken end inside the hub. Use a sewing needle or other small, pointed object to work the broken piece out of the speedometer hub. If the end is not worn or broken, reattach the fitting and proceed to Step 5.

Otherwise, obtain a new cable and proceed to the next step. Loosen the speedometer cable connection fitting on the underside of the speedometer by turning it counterclockwise with pliers. Pull the end of the cable out of the speedometer. Remove any cable guides on the front forks or the handlebars of the motorcycle. The particular type of motorcycle determines the type of guides and tool needed to remove them.

Put a small amount of speedometer cable grease on the square end of the cable, and reattach it to the front wheel speedometer hub.

Route the cable to the underside of the speedometer and attach the upper end to the fitting on the speedometer. Tighten the fitting with pliers.About Bobs. Custom Work.

The Triumph Experience www. My speedometer makes a grinding noise and the needle bounces within 10 mph of actual speed. I pulled out the cable and greased it. I also checked for kinks in the cable. All looks good. I'm guessing it's time for a gauge refurbishment.

CJD john durant. I'm going through this right now. The grease in the tach and speedo turns to glue, especially if the car has gone for a long stretch without being driven. If the faces are cosmetically good, then taking them apart and re-greasing is not difficult at all. An afternoon for each gage is all it takes. Once it gets to the point of making noise, you run the risk of fraying the flexible drive cable or stripping the odometer gears. Best to get it re- greased soon If you skim down to the end, I am now finished with the faces and working on the internals and calibration.

I have finished the tach, which is similar to the speedo, and will be posting the speedo rebuild in the next day or two I look forward to your next post.

Create an Account.This project started due to the lack of light in the gauges at night as well as the white dust that begins to appear on the gauge faces and glass when the paint inside begins to flake off. Even though all of my gauges worked perfectly well mechanically, I spent about six months collecting spare gauges so that I would have any extra parts that I might need should I break something or find that one of my gauges was having hidden issues.

In the end, I was glad I did, as my gauges all gave me fits removing the bezels from the cases, whereas the used gauges opened easily. Also, this is not about calibration or gauge repairing, simply cleaning and painting the housings to reflect the light better. So following this along will show you what I did, along with my Rheostat Rebuilding and this was the end result at night. These were the starting used gauges that I learned the disassembly procedure on. All in all they were in pretty good shape, with the exception of yellow needles and dust inside.

Somehow I ended up with two speedometers, which worked out well, because a BCF buddy in California needed some internal parts for his. Pay attention to the parts and the order of disassembly and then reassembly.

Note the two fragile cork gaskets that seal the case and keep light from escaping? Starting from the top, this is the order of the parts as they fit onto the back of each small gauge. Remember that I said the cork gaskets were fragile?

Notice there is only one here? They are also very light, and can disappear easily. This is the temperature gauge completely disassembled. The hard part is getting the back of the gauges away from the front back plates without bending the needles.

The housing is the same for the temperature, voltage and fuel gauges. The oil pressure gauge is different and you'll see why soon. Note the dirt and dull paint. That burned green light filter doesn't make the 2 watt bulbs reflect light any brighter either. The case is now empty and ready for bead blasting. To keep everything together for the individual gauges, zip locks come in handy. The voltage gauge has a bit of rust around the edge where it fits to the bezel.

The spare voltage gauge came apart rather easily. Too bad mine didn't. Again, same parts, different faces, but you don't want to mix up the actual gauge mechanisms. These cork seals are here again and are a pain, but you need them. Now comes the tough guy, the oil pressure gauge. There is a small leather washer that fits on the back of that fitting between the oil line from the block and the nipple.

The oil gauge uses this green plastic band to deflect the light, rather than a bulb cover like the other three. This is what the pressure tube looks like inside the oil pressure gauge. This one couldn't have been very bright with all of that rust and dull paint in there. These are all of the pieces that fit inside the case.
